A ticking clock is a narrative device that imposes a deadline on the story's action. The bomb goes off in two hours. The antidote must be administered before midnight. The spaceship launches tomorrow with or without you. By giving characters a finite window to act, you transform every scene into a race against time and make every decision feel more consequential. The ticking clock answers the reader's unconscious question of 'why does this have to happen now?' and eliminates the option of characters simply waiting things out.
If your story ever feels like it's drifting or your characters seem to have unlimited time to make decisions, a ticking clock might be exactly what you need. Deadlines compress the action, raise the emotional temperature, and force characters into decisions they might otherwise avoid. It's also a structural gift - knowing when the clock runs out gives you a natural endpoint to build toward, which can solve a lot of pacing problems.
The entire film counts down to the noon train carrying killers - clocks appear throughout the film, and the real-time pacing makes every minute feel heavy.

For maximum impact, push the resolution right up against the deadline. Near-misses are more exciting than comfortable margins.
Write a scene where a character has exactly ten minutes to accomplish something important - convince someone to stay, find a lost object, or make a critical phone call. Reference the passing time at least three times in the scene, and notice how the shrinking window changes the character's behavior, decision-making, and emotional state as the deadline approaches.
